Euchre is a trick-taking card game, mainly popular in Canada and in the USA (especially in the North-East and Midwest), but also played in Australia, New Zealand and some coastal areas of Britain (e.g. Devon, Cornwall, Kent and the Channel Islands).

Euchre is played with 4 players, using 24 or 32 cards from a French-suited deck. The game is played in clockwise direction. There is a medium random chance involved in the game. It takes around 25 minutes to complete a game. The main skills required to play Euchre are memory and tactics. Euchre is related to Skat.

How to play Euchre

Players

Euchre is played with four players in two teams of two players.

Deck and cards

Euchre is played with 24 or 32 cards from a French-suited deck. When playing with 24 cards, the following cards in each of the four suits are used: Ace - King - Queen - Jack - 10 - 9. When playing with 32 cards, the 9s and 8s are also included.

The ranking of a non-trump suit is: Ace - King - Queen - Jack - 10 - 9.

The ranking of the trump suit is: Jack of trump suit (Right Bower) - Jack of other suit in same color as trump suit (Left Bower) - Ace of trumps - King of trumps - Queen of trumps - 10 of trumps - 9 of trumps.

Objective

The objective in Euchre is to score points by winning more tricks than the other team.

Deal

Each player is dealt five cards (when playing with 24 cards) or seven cards (when playing with 32 cards) in clockwise direction. The top card of the four remaining cards (kitty) is turned face-up.

Bidding

Each player in turn can either pass or decide to play with the suit of the top card shown as trump suit. If a player decides to play with the suit, the dealer picks up the top card of the kitty and discards one of his cards.

If none of the players decides to play with the suit of the top card, there is another round. Each player can now pick a different suit as trump. No card is picked up by the dealer in this round.

If each player also passes in the second round, the cards are dealt again. This is called a misdeal. When the stick the dealer option is enabled, there is no misdeal but the dealer must declare trump at the end of the second round.

The team who chooses the trump is known as the makers. The other team becomes the defenders.

A player can decide to go alone, meaning that his partner doesn’t participate. The cards of the partner don’t participate in the game. Going alone increases the points for winning all five tricks from 2 to 4, but does not have any effect on the scoring when winning 3 or 4 tricks.

When the Canadian Loner option is enabled, and the partner of the dealer chooses the face-up card of the kitty, he has to play alone.

Gameplay

The player who starts depends on whether a player is going alone or not. If a player is going alone, the player to his left leads the first trick. Otherwise, the player to the left of the dealer starts the first trick.

The game is played in clockwise direction. Following suit is mandatory. The left bower is considered as a member of the trump suit.

The player with the highest cards wins the trick. If a trump was played, the highest trump card wins the trick. Otherwise, the highest card of the lead suit wins the trick. The winner of the trick starts the next trick.

Scoring

• Makers win 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point for the makers
• Makers win 5 tricks: 2 points for the makers
• Maker goes alone and wins 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point for the makers
• Maker goes alone and wins 5 tricks: 4 points for the makers
• Defenders win 3 or more tricks: 2 points for the defenders

Game end

The team that first reaches the target score (5, 7, 10, 11, 15, 20, 25) wins the game.
