Eclipsed by his father, Robert (Michael Caine), a celebrated author, and licking his wounds after his marriage to Noreen (Hope Davis) collapses, David resolves to get his life in order by applying for a high-profile job on a New York City talk show. The Weather Man is more of a parable than a story; it just goes on and on and on, and the only point is to endure. It's not very uplifting, but sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's sad; sometimes hopeful, and sometimes melancholy. But that's life. Fresh score.

The film was shot extensively within and around Chicago, with lots of authentic bits of Chicago culture sprinkled into the frame and tons of beauty shots of the city for skyline enthusiasts. Most tantalizing, though, is the unbelievable view from Nic Cage's character's apartment.

Development. Cage plays a fictionalised version of himself who he said bore little resemblance to his real offscreen personality. He originally turned down the role "three or four times" but changed his mind after writer-director Tom Gormican wrote him a personal letter.
